Since the old exhaust was hanging
on by the tiniest bit of metal at this stage, there was no
turning back. The exhaust was clamped into place - but was a
tiny bit too close to the rear diffuser on the Sports bumper.
Adding a few washers allowed the exhaust to sit slightly lower,
and meant there would be none of the melting of bumpers
associated with some aftermarket exhausts when they're not
fitted properly.
The car was lowered down, and Al sat in to turn the engine on.
Being the first of the day to be completed, there was quite a
bit of anticipation. Richie opted for the Race version of the
exhaust, and as such I thought it might be a bit over the top.
I'm happy to say I was completely wrong - the exhaust made the
car sound exactly like it should - beautiful deep note at idle,
and a nice rasp when revving it. In fact, I was sort of worried
that I'd made a mistake in ordering the Sports version of the
exhaust (Eisenmann offer stock, Sports and Race version - each
slightly louder than the other, the Stock being the same as the
OEM item) because I thought it might be too quiet.
Next up was Dave with his M3 - he was having the Supersprint
exhaust fitted. Dave had the sensible idea of ordering new
mounting brackets - you can re-use the originals providing
they're in decent condition, but Dave's choice seemed inspired
as the olds ones were perished badly. Brian, who was also in
attendance, had fitted the Supersprint exhaust to his own 1995
M3 a few weeks earlier - so Dave knew exactly what to expect
from his, and wasn't disappointed. The exhaust bolted on without
any drama, and the M3 was down off the ramp. Once again, the
sound with the exhaust fitted was fantastic - the M3 engine
really doesn't need much help to sound great, and unlike some
other exhausts I've heard (Scorpion being the main culprit) the
new exhaust made a great sounding engine sound even better.
Despite normally keeping my car spotless, I did arrive with what
looked like a farmers car. In order to make it look even worse,
the guys decided to vandalise it for me. So anything to detract
from the dirt, and writing all over the car was good. Thankfully
my car was up next on the ramp.
