Hey guys, as the title says I just picked up an e36 318 coupe today. Body is in decent condition for the age, I plan to give it a nice shine up soon to make it look a little better!

Basically bought it with no history, NCT'd until March 2012, so suspension etc. should be grand on it for another while - havn't noticed any problems so far today anyway.

I want a bit of piece of mind so what would you service on it if you just bought it? Just hit 126,000 miles as I drove it home from the garage. Got hold of the bentley manual from here (thanks!) so plan to do everything myself on it now - any suggestions?

Apart from oil, filters and plugs what else would you consider important to have replaced or checked? Thanks!!!!

We now have a challenge for the bmw-driver.net people.

I will have approx €6 to spend on a car in November (after the wedding) so give me some ideas folks. Anything considered even Jap scrap but the catch is the €6k must inc 1yrs road tax.

Already i'm considering an E36 M3 or a Mitsi Evo IV (due to UJM3 putting that idea in my head :D )

P's doesn't need to be economical as i have the van for that :D

With a few options it comes to €58k (not including the cost of the LM's!). Ouch!

You'd buy a fair amount of car for €60k+ nowadays.

Still, it does look nice!

Did anyone ever have a really crap week with your car? Well I think I've just had one. Mind you, nothing too serious but just ridiculously annoying!!!

It all started last Saturday night when I was stopped at a Garda Check point outside Belgooly on the way to Kinsale.

I knew that everything was in order but I had a sneaking suspicion that the Donegal style font on my Reg plates (same as MK2KID) was going to land me in it. Sure enough, they did.

The Gurad on duty being the smug git that he was, gave me a nice little lecture on the 'illegality' of my plates and went on to grill me on how long I
had owned the car. In the end, he just took my name and asked me to get the plates changes to standard ones. It could have been worse but I knew that I'd get a bit of a telling off sooner or later about these plates.
The day after, I went off and got a nice set of safe, legal boring acrylic plates!

On Monday night, I then decided to head out for a walk in Rochestown (Cork) with the girlfriend. We parked up the car and enjoyed two coffees while waiting to see what way the weather was going to go.
Suddenly the heavens opened up and it began to bucket down. In a nutshell, that was the end of any thoughts about going for a walk. After finishing our coffees, we decided to head back in towards the city, only to discover that the rain had just caused some ridiculous flooding.

Before I knew it, I was in a traffic jam with water up above my front number plate. I've never seen anything quite like it. Things were so bad, I kept checking the floor carpet to see if there was water coming in from somewhere...lucklily there wasn't. At one stage, the water was so high that some cars were attempting to mount a nearby kerb. Unfortunately I tried this too but gave up in the end.

To cut a long story short, I eventually got through the flooding only to discover that I had scuffed my two 19" alloys (drivers side); this must have happended as I tried mounting the kerb. To make matters worse, it looks like I also hit something in the flood ( A rock or something) which caused me to crack my front carbon fiber splitter. This was on the passengers side so wasn't caused by the kerb.

To say, I was gutted was an understatement.

Right now, I'm between two minds as to whether I should just get rid of the splitter altogether (it is ridiculously low and does warrant careful driving at all times) or whether to order a new one. I do like the look of it, no matter how impractical it is. It's a tough call.

I might even restore the car to its original look, i.e chrome kidney grill and no splitter. What do you guys think? Am I better with or without the splitter?

As for the alloys, they're not badly scratched but they're still bugging the life out of me, so I have a guy in Cork (Leo Wheelan) sorting these out for me next Saturday.

So lads, take a look at the before and after shots below and tell me if I should keep the 'boy-racer all stealth blacked out look' at the front with the carbon fiber lip or whether I should go back to the de-pimped clean original look.

All comments would be appreciated!

HI all,
im heading to newry tomorrow and was looking for a recomendation on where to get tyres for my e39. I had to get an emergency fix today and the only tyre Dave McCanns had in stock was some economy brand one for 140euro, cant even remember the name. It was for the rear left hand side and you could even see the thread starting to show. The sizes im looking for are 255/40r rear and 235/45r on the front so any recomendations would be great.... or is it even worth my while?

i also noticed that the spare wheel in the boot was brand new bridgestone but it was 235/45r, could i have used this on the rear or would that have caused furthe damage?
thanks

Got the codes read on the E39 and the only one showing was a misfire on cyl.2. The mechanic wasnt too worried about this as it can happen intermittently. After spending close to 2.5k repairing the car in the last month i want it to be right and the idea that there could be some other fault is a little worrying.
I've not noticed any problems when starting from cold/hot and it always appears to run smooth.
So i guess my question is is it common to have misfires that don't require much more than monitoring in case they get worse? Also can a misfire code be in there awhile and not cleared, indicating the problem may have been resolved and the code not cleared.
There were no eml's on the dash either.

A high-speed race on a dangerous Staten Island street known as "dead man's curve" ended with a fiery crash Saturday that decapitated one of the drivers, police said.

Philip Boney-Scrivano was speeding in a 2009 Honda sedan he bought last week for his 20th birthday. He raced along at about 100 mph with another car in hot pursuit about 1:50 a.m. When the speeding cars reached a bend on Bay St. where two lanes merge into one, tragedy struck.

Boney-Scrivano, whose friend sat beside him as he tore down the quiet street, lost control of his car, which skidded wildly for more than 100 feet before it jumped a curb, plowed into a parking meter and then slammed into a utility pole, police said.

Boney-Scrivano was thrown from the vehicle and his body was cut in two when he hit the pole, police and witnesses said.

"The boom was so loud it sounded like it happened in my house," said Jorge Vendrell, 40, who lives a few doors down from the gruesome wreck.

The out-of-control car - with newfound pal John Carlos, 25, still strapped in the front seat - smashed into a gas pump at the Citgo station at the corner of Hannah St. The pump exploded and searing flames quickly engulfed the Honda and Boney-Scrivano's body.

Remarkably, firefighters managed to pull Carlos - who suffered severe burns - from what was left of the burning, mangled car. He was rushed to Richmond University Medical Center and was later released, police and his family said.

"It's a real miracle," said his 21-year-old sister, Paola Aleman - who is the wife of Korey Swatz, the driver of the other car in the race.

"The car was crushed like a can of soda," Aleman told the Daily News. "God is still with him."

"All he says is, 'I just remember seeing the pole getting closer and closer,'" she said "After the hit, he blacked out."

Swatz, 33, who lives on Staten Island, was charged with driving while intoxicated, police said.

The group met Boney-Scrivano just hours before at a mutual friend's birthday bash at a bar, On the Rocks, and were speeding to a White Castle to grab a bite to eat, family said.

The stretch of Bay St. where Boney-Scrivano died is notorious as a popular spot for drag racers, complained rattled residents.

"They call it 'dead man's curve,'" said John Encarnacion, assistant manager at the Rent-a-Center next door to the Citgo.

"Drag racing and betting - it's dangerous," said Encarnacion, 21. "It gets very [busy] out here, especially in the summer. This road's a killer."

Boney-Scrivano, a former hockey player at Susan E. Wagner High School, bought the Honda six days ago, distraught neighbors said.

"He was a good kid. He'd give you the shirt off his back," said his uncle, Patrick Boney, 47, a postal worker from New Jersey.

Investigators suspect Boney-Scrivano was drinking before the crash. His MySpace page is full of references to marijuana and his most recent Facebook posting was Wednesday, when he asked "Anyone down to blaze?"

The grisly wreck comes just days after two young Staten Island men were killed when their car flipped over after hitting a telephone pole.

Daniel Peluso, 19, and Jeff Capretta, 20, died after their Nissan Altima was nearly cut in half in the crash last Sunday morning. Investigators believe alcohol played a role in that accident.
