blue smoke e46

i have a 2001 bmw e46 320d. the other day i was coming back from haldfords in dublin went onto the moterway and look in my mirrors and i covered the hole road in blue smoke. pulled in and took a look smell like burning oil also my power dropped. turned the car off for about 10 mins turn it back...
