Its screen only, not a full sat nav kit, you will require to have all the other parts in order to use the screen.

I have a standard e39 business tape deck what would it take to get this to work and I only want. It for the screen and the phone function no interest in the nav as I just use my phone ..

Also will this unit take an after market iPod or aux cable ??

it would take a lot of modifying, including new wiring harness and a lot of other units in the boot. You would be looking around 500-600 to go from standard tape or cd player to OEM BMW widescreen, there are other aftermarket units out there you can use, which are especially made for e39, like the dynavin units.
