GERMAN luxury automaker BMW AG said yesterday that its sales in 2005 were up 9.9pc from the previous year, with demand for its popular series of sedans leading the increase.

The Munich-based company said it sold 1,328,000 vehicles in 2005, up from 1,208,700 the year before.

The increase was led by an 10.1pc increase in sales of BMW brand cars, largely the result of demand for the revamped version of the BMW 3-series model and the flagship 7-series.

Demand for Minis, the revamped version of the classic Mini Cooper, rose by 8.7pc to 200,400 from 184,400 in 2004.

It was the first time the brand broke the 200,000 barrier.

Sales of Rolls-Royce models increased only slightly, to 796 last year from 792 the year before.

"We expect the BMW Group to remain on the course of growth also in 2006," chief executive Helmut Panke said yesterday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

"Therefore, we aim at increasing our retail volume further and we aim at achieving a new retail peak this year."

In terms of sales by country, the US was BMW's top market last year, with unit sales of 307,000 - up 3.7pc from the 296,100 vehicles sold in 2004.

Germany was second, with 295,900 cars sold - up from 283,600 in 2004.

In third place was Britain, where 162,550 cars were sold, up 7.7pc from the previous year.

Italy and Japan rounded up the top five markets.

Shares of BMW were flat at €37.74 in late Frankfurt trading yesterday.
