BMW Theft Key Cloning

It seem this has been rampant in the UK for some time. Was just informed of the following on Boards yesterday.

BMW Thefts
"A friend of mine had a 5 series stolen and still had both keys. I didn't believe it was possible but apparently thieves have a system now to access the onboard computer and program a blank key. This happened a few days back on the Northside. Thought it was worth making owners aware. "

I then watched a report on BBC Watchdog about a device for sale on the internet allowing thieves to steal BMWs and other high-end cars without the need for the owner's keys. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-19562487

The watchdog report quotes BMW in the UK as follows: "None of our latest models - new 3 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series and 7 Series - nor any other BMW built after September 2011 can be stolen using the method highlighted."

According to Pistonhead "as long as you can enter the car to access the OBD port you're on your way"

This news came as a shock to me today. I have a 2010 F10 I recently brought in from the UK. Am I way behind the curve here or are many of us at risk tonight?

Does anyone have more info on this - and hopfully a solution.

Many years ago I used to lock the steering wheel of my VW Golf with a chain and lock, when car theft in Dublin was bad - never thought I'd be back there again !!

Thanks - sorry for the essay.

In relation to the security update, it is available in Ireland however as there is no known cases in Ireland there is a cost involved to have the update completed. The cost comes in at €60 and the update can take from 3-4 hours to complete.

Poor response, but as expected. €60 is steep for something that just disables the window opening function with the key in the lock. If I were you, I'd put the €60 towards buying a €130 disklock as the €60 BMW update won't stop your car from being nicked if they smash the window.

I bought one of these a few months ago: http://www.halfords.ie/webapp/wcs/s..._productId_216879_langId_-1_categoryId_212404

I generally only use it at night, it's a bit clunky but I reckon it's probably the best deterrent available.

I came across this thread on E90 post: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?p=13813906#post13813906 and this possible solution http://www.securemycar.co.uk/bmw-stolen.html

The ‘attempted’ thefts are the really scary thing; they smash your window, programme a key and steal something small like your ipod. You don’t realise that a new key has been coded so you repair your window and go about your business as usual. They can then comeback any time they want and take the car. A random piece of advice I picked up along the way was to cover your OBD port with sellotape so then you’ll know if it has ever been tampered with, I never realised the point behind the sellotape until now!

That may be happening too, but the CCTV footage being posted is mainly of the window being smashed and the car driven off within minutes

True, and I'd imagine the majority of OBD thefts are taken there and then but I just wanted to highlight this other method which can be used.

Just for the craic I tried to use an e46 key in the door lock of my e63. It just spinnned around & around. When I took the blade out of the e63 keyfob only then would the door unlock & windows auto roll down. I had read somewhere that the windows would roll down with any old thing in the door key slot...not true.

JD were quoting €60 for the QE Software Update, €135 if I wanted a full software update including QE update.

Looks like Keanes might be selling the latter?

Did they say that they would cover any issue that arose in the event of a full software failing? I'd love to know the likelihood of a failure during an update, I want to get mine updated after I so the Sat Nav retrofit.

No Mark that never came up. I assume they would do whatever is needed to fix the issue.

Yeah they said it was for a full update. I asked what benefits there are in a full update and they couldn't tell me.

BMW Ireland won't say what the QE update actually does so it boils down to paying 165 plus vat for something you dong know about.

I would love to know what would happen alright, you know what they say about assume, it makes an ass out of u & me.

I had a prior car in before a few years back and they done an update during a service without asking which they told me had failed or had issues and they needed to redo it, so car was stuck there most of the day instead of the 90mins fast lane.

From what I read, you need a CAS update to V47.1 or higher to close the key duplication loophole..

What it does is that it adds an added security that the key can only be duplicated when a valid key is present..

Think just a module update should do it?

I am starting to wonder if that patch actually exists

From daten files the only recent changes are (In v48.1 and v49) below.
If there was anything else changed in 47.x, such as a CAS software update, the change would be below, but I can't see anything related to CAS or security.

If you have Daten v47.1, please check the kmm_EK.txt and report back if any different from below.

IT was in the Herald yesterday that a Lithuanian/East European gang working with some Russian criminals were arrested in a cross border operation. The article said they were involved in 120 car thefts across Ireland predominantly Leinster. They will probably get suspended sentences or disappear on bail but to have caught them at all is good news.

security tips

U might need to install GPS tracking unit, then u can track ur car locations (very helpful sometimes)

and the second thing i can recommend is to install dual way car alarm system (pager)

hope it will help
Hi

The security update was a red herring, the equipment that programs the keys was updated 2 weeks after BMW did that update.

The equipment just rolls back the software to the old version and then they program the keys, same as before.

if its a software fix, then there is nothing BMW or anyone can do, as software can be hacked as already proven on nearly every car.

The trackers are being blocked by jammers when they get into the car, and they have a locator device that easily finds it once they have your car and get it removed.

They are always 1 step ahead of what the manufacturers do, and the manufacturers make it easy.

There is only 1 level of security on these vehicles, and the older vehicles there was 2 and 3 levels, remote control, mechanical and also transponder. Now there is only 1 level, an integrated transponder and remote. Crack it and your away with the car.

They just keep doing the same wrong thing, and not taking heed of the warnings they are given.

I was in a meeting with Thatcham, Ford, VW and Audi in 2005 and told them they had issues and needed to do something, guess what, nothing.
