this may be a stupid question but is there something in red paint that makes it prone to fading, i know that individual surcumstances such as washing/protecting properly come into play but just wondering is there a underlying reason

Not really. Most (older) red cars were painted with a solid colour. Ie not base coat and lacquer but the base coat is the top coat (solid colour) and no clear coat was applied. So as there was no clear coat (lacquer) applied the solid colour tended to oxidised or fade. A lot of (non metalic) cars were painted this way but red was the worst for fading as it would turn pink. Afaik Dakar yellow was the last BMW painted this way
