E34 518i overheating

Hi Guys, I’m having issues with my engine overheating, I’ve a feeling the head is either gone or on the way out. One of the hoses just beneath the hose with the red paint on it in the attached image has split, it comes from the air intake boot, my question is, what is the part that it’s connected to? Is it an air flow sensor? Cheers
