Hopefully I will be in a position next year to buy a car I've always wanted. Couple of questions.

Do I get a manual or auto?
What's the preferred engine?
Is leather that important?

Was hoping to get a 01 model but if the right 98 or later car comes up I'll snap it up.

thanks
Darren

I was in an E39 530D with auto/tip tronic. That was a nice car, and provided quick down changes if required.

I'd probably go for the engine with the most torque, as the 5 is a big car, you want an engine that can carry it with ease !

And leather is very important, especially on a 5.

or you could get an Alpina ! theres an Estoril Blue Alpina B12 E39 in Burlington Carpark - been there since yesterday. Can't miss it - reg says B12

Theres quite a few E39 Alpinas on the UK Autotrader - insurance will be an issue with them I'd imagine though...

The 523i is very smooth and economical, is quite fast too. I don't think they ever came with the sport kits as standard though (am open to correction), but quite a few have it... Depends on how much road tax and insurance you want to be lumbered with when it comes to the 5 imo

I know the badge numbers don't always match the exact engine size on BMW's so is there anywhere to find them? Just want to figure out the costs for tax and insurance before narrowing down the one's I'm interested in.

If I could sell my car this year I may even get one before Christmas.

Very true - there was an Individual 540i in Total BMW. It was used in the Buying guide feature, so they only use cars that are in tip-top condition. It was fully loaded and pristine - the owner put it up for sale a month or so later - for £8k. It's a whole lot of car for the price of a new Fiesta!!

Darren - I drive a '98 520, and love it. A few people feel it's a little underpowered, but it suits me fine. However, the guys in the 523's (2.5) find that they get the same fuel economy as I get in my little 2.0!
2 friends of mine are selling their 5's; one is a 98 523 2.5, the other is a 99 520 2.0; €14k would buy either. Both are black with mileages below 80k.

Dave I think they get the same fuel economy because you rev your poor car to bits. [:-ashamed]

I always think espically with loads of motorway driving a high capacity engine will not loose much in the way of MPG.

Revving is fine as long as you keep the car well serviced, imho! Plus, I don't see much motorway, so my fuel consumption tends to be higher.

Whats your budget darren? What engine size are you after.
Not sure yet what the budget will be. Depends really on what I get for the Civic Coupe and what extra I can put to it. Civic will be going up for sale soon through the usual papers.

Things have changed since then. Dropping down a number to an E38. Will be getting a 728 or 735 this year.
