hi all
i am looking to buy an e46 that needs a bit of work on the engine i think its the engine anyway. the problem is that it stalls after you lift your foot off the accelerator. it idles fine and is driving OK but when you accelerate and try to change gear or accelerate when stationary it cuts out. it starts fine again after it stalls. its an e46 318i 1.9 petrol 1999. has anyone any suggestions on what it could be.

Could be many things. Faulty icv, air flow meter, air leaks in the system... I had the exact same problem and it turned out to be the air flow meter.

Start with the cheap and easy to check items, leaks on the intake side. Check the rubber flexible hoses for any sign of a split or air leak.
