Hi there - I am not due a service but the oil is running low...can someone please advise / recommend a suitable oil I can buy in the local garage?
It for a petrol 2004 / e46 - just coming up to 100K miles.
The manual says bmw long life 01 spec oil but all I could find in the garage was LL-04.
Thanks
David

AFAIK, the LL04 is simply an update of the long life standard. As long as the viscosity grade is the same as recommended I don't think there is a problem.

e46 oil leak

It includes LL01 standard.
Either is fine in this case albeit LL01 is slightly cheaper

Hi there - I have a 2004 e46 (petrol), 110K miles

Its been in the garage for the last two weeks with them trying different fixes - none of which have been successful. They have replaced seals /rocker cover (I'd need to get the full list of items from the garage).

Each time they think its fixed - i.e running on the lift for 30+mins with no leaks but when you drive it, whatever the difference is in terms of pressure on the engine its back pumping out oil.

Its a local garage - not BMW specialist as its an 11 year old car but I am looking for advice on what I could be asking them to check. They appear to have run out of ideas on what might be causing the problem.

Appreciate any insights or similar experiences people may have had.

I have heard that oil leaks in e46 are fairly common

Thanks

What engine - assuming 6 cylinder - 320i or 325i, then the Oil Filter Housing Gasket is a very common leak area as well as the rocker cover gasket (which you say has already been changed).

Another area for leakage can be the sump gasket (far less common).

Its the 316i - latest part they are trying today is the crank shaft oil seal.

Hi,

Based on past experiences, a main dealer will do the oil even if you've just done it yourself... and if your very lucky, even stick a spare litre in your boot and charge you another €16-20 for the benefit. :(

... and then they wonder why we don't want to go to them for servicing etc.

Davey, iirc you are somewhere around Ennis? If so, give John Roche a shout in Gort - 091 631100. If you can be sorted, he's likely the man to do it in your vicinity
