I've a 2011 520d.....is this engine in the firing lane for the problem?

no was resolved from 2010
No issues with my E60 520d. 2008 that I bought in Nov 2011 at 95,000km. Now 153,000km and no noises.
Quick look at the live vehicles on fleet, it looks like we have 12 BMW's that probably have the affected engine (118d,318d,520d E60) up to the end of 2010, and as far as I'm aware, we haven't had a single timing chain failure on any.
Was the issue sorted after 2010 on all models? Have many, many N47's from 2011 onwards.

just after changing my m8 n47s timing chain. tentioner was out fully.
chain was so streched, it was about to jump a toth or two, or break. so we made the tools required and replaced the chain, and runners and tentioners unfortinatly the chain is on the back of the engine so we just took it out, but i think it can be done by just removing gearbox and tilting the engine up at front.
this happens becouse the sprockets tooths is made to tiny and sharp, thats why chain gets eaten, and it wears out. if not changed in early stages, when giving the problem, if it wont jump the tooth or break, it will wear out sprockets, making them eat avay new chain even faster. ps the crank sprocket is weldet with the crancshaft so u dont want to change whole crank eather.
ps the timing tools can be bought from me, for really cheap money:smile:

1 series 3 series and 5 series.all 2.0 4 cylinder td engines.as far as I know from 06 to 09.

N47 diesel engine chain problems and fix!
This week we got in some E90 with 83k miles and with broken timing chain .
So first thing was to strip it to see what damage is inside and does it worth repair or will need second hand engine .
It happened on very low speed so not so many broken parts - top timing chain,sliders,4 rockers .For sake of god,was replaced 4 hydraulic adjusters and cam shaft housing box ,which is very common to crack and may be not visible straight away and can get problems in near future .She got full new set of 3 chains ,sliders,tensioners,nozzle ,fuel pump sprocket,gaskets ,crankshaft seal ,injector washers ,full engine service kit .Double mass flywheel had visual wear signs ,mowing too much front and back and leaking oil from internals,visual clutch disc wear ,so she got all new set of clutch kit with dual mass flywheel .All parts got from Frank Kean BMW in Naas road .
Car is back on road and drives perfect!
BTW it doesnt worth to get second hand engine as it would need to change chains straight away anyway and its extra expenses

The price to fix engine after chain was broken ,would be from 2k and up ,to non repairable

they dont broke straight without any signs of wear ,so its enough time to sort this even after it will start to make bad sound

2007 E60 520dse M47/T2 Manual from 12.2009 to 05.2012 from 73,841km to 114,260km - no issues
2010 F10 520dse N47T Auto from 05.2012 to 11.2013 from 28,000km to 52,200km - no issues
E60 was pre-LCI so not thought to suffer issues, Post 2010 less risky too? Either way no major problems with either, to date....
