If you got a used box would it not have to be activated with your card by sky before you could use it.the old ones were fine with any card but the+ and hd are different ,I could be wrong

You just stick your card in the used box, ring Sky and they will activate for you in a few minutes. You can often use the box even without ringing Sky but certain services won't work correctly e.g. recording.
