Thinking this would be a handy thing to have, a dual button type keyfob for opening/closing softtop/windows etc. is it possible? and on a scale of 1-10 (10 being hardest), how hard is it?

Want to do it to my e36 vert.

Yeah fully automatic.

I'm not bad at wiring, but don't know much about sending/receiving signals etc.. I can work from diagrams easy enough

This is a rather late reply but hopefully it can be of some use.

I previously purchased a Smart Top unit for a Volvo C70.
Wiring was easy enough on that model.

It used the existing keyfob to raise and lower the roof.
e.g. Press the unlock button 3 times one second apart to lower and raise the roof.

Also allowed me to overide the system to raise and lower while the car was moving (up to a certain speed).

I got a relative to ship it from the states.
For the price it was well worth it!

They have units for various makes of cars.

I purchased from http://www.mods4cars.com

Hope this helps.
