The M42 was a 1.8 (1796cc) and the M44 a 1.9 (1896cc) so the ownership docs and the tax disk should be a good start.

@ JM1 thanks a mill thats a nice car but id prefer somethin a little more original so i can decide if and what mods to stick on it but it does look good id like somethin around 96 or after ive gotten it into my head that i really want that m44 engine that came out half way through 96

You should have no problem getting a '96-'97 MTec 318is for around
the €4k mark, especially in the market at the moment.

I've had a couple of 318is' and they are great cars...had a '94 1.8
and just sold my '99 1.9 a couple of months ago.

thanks don did ya notice much difference in the 2 cars with the extra torque and that was the 99 engine a lot more smoother and that ?

 

Didn't notice too much of a difference in power to be honest...but the
later one did feel smoother alright, and was a nicer car overall to drive.
