ASC Button (don't laugh!)

This has being annoying me for a while.

In my 2001 e46 325ti pressing the ASC button turns off the traction control. However holding it down for about 8 seconds not only turns it off but it cannot be turned on until the engine is switched off.

Ive read somewhere that in cars with DSC it turns the traction control totally off but I havn't seen a good explanation of what it does in cars with ASC only.
The car feels pretty much the same as with T/C off.

Any ideas?

When I keep the ASC button pressed in my E46 320d the yellow light stays on, and the car goes round corners sideways ;)

Didn't think it would be possible in a diesel. Not that I do that sort of thing (That's not what BMW Diesels are for!) but the traction ON definately helps to keep things straight
