Anyone on here able to fit cams and do vanos seals on a s52? How mich work is involved and how long does it usually take? Im fitting a m52 to my touring and im in 2 minds about fitting the cams now or doing them another time, its an unknown engine so ive no idea really how well it runs to begin with.

Took me a good 4 hours or so the first time I done them but I was learning as I went along that time and being pretty careful and double and triple checking stuff. The vanos seals are very easy. Cams are fine too just as long as you take your time taking them out and bolting the new ones down so not to crack them.

Trickiest part is rotating the cam for the vanos in order to get them meshing in the right splines. I made up a little tool to hold the cam using one of the washers that goes on outside the sproket from an old M50 parts engine.

To test the vanos afterwards to make sure it's advancing enough and that you have the splines right, you just need an air-line and I think I used an old PAS pipe that I fitted an airline connection to and was able to bolt this onto the vanos oil feed then and just worked the solenoid manually as didn't have the test unit to plug into it.

You can use all the proper tools to do it too but there's no need for them really. I had most of them but the few tools I actually could have used on the M52 the first time weren't in the kit hence making my own up.

Only other issue when doing them with an M20 flywheel is that you don't have the handy foolproof hole in the flywheel to find TDC so I got it by using a dial gauge in cylinder 1 spark-plug hole. There's a mark on the front crank pulley too but just like being double sure with the gauge and degree wheel

I dont have any tools at all really tobdo the job other than basic spanners and an angle grinder. I thinkbits the sort of job I might pay someone to do inless I got all the proper tools for it.

I think I got mybairbox of you a few yes ago and remeber you telling me you had the tool to lock the cams?

Ive always been of the opinion of gettong it running and see hownthe engone is first but I kinda thought feck it might as well do it now

I wouldn't have a clue who to call or even where to look?! I'm in Cavan at the min but there's a chance I might end up in Dublin again soon. Anyway, not much rush, I should really get the car on the road and clock up some miles. Would be interesting to get it on a dyno as well for a before and after.
