Importing a Racecar from outside EU?

If one were to import a trackday car/racecar into Ireland, I understand that VRT won't be applicable as the car won't be used on the road. What about VAT though? Is that still applicable if the car originated from outside the EU?

Hi mate how is the US of A ;) was just chating to our frined in here 325ix about some more work and going on the track some time (also I'm not sure she drives that fast but will try here nerves next week :D
To your question I think they might still hit you with that and the fees at the port of entry but will check with revenue for you just to be sure to be sure.
Are yo bringing only the M3 or the 318 as well?

Howdy, Chris! I'm bringing the M3 for sure but not the 318ti.

I am, however, trying to unload my 528 here as I already have another 5-series over there. If I do sell the 528, I wanted to buy a friend's racecar, another e36 M3 that's being run in BMW CCA Club races here. I'd like to do some sprints and hillclimbs in it but only if I don't have to pay VAT. If that's the case, I'll just look for (or build) a car over there.

Tell Stephanie that I said hello. :)

If it's outside the eu you'll have to pay the following:

Customs , which is 10% of the car purchase price + shipping costs.

then vat at 21% on the total of above (i.e. 21% of 110%).

You only need to pay vrt if your using it on the road.

However if you own the car alrady for a period im not sure how the purchase price will work. I have been involved in importing cars outside the eu before and this is how it works based on an irish person or company buying outside the eu.

I kinda thought the would be the case, even for racecars. I was hoping against it but ehhhhhhh. The VAT - not to mention having to factor in the shipping costs - is the main reason I don't want to import the 528i in the first place.

I guess there's no escaping it if the car is coming in from the US. Oh, well!:(

Exemptions from paying VRT

There are different reliefs and exemptions from VRT. Even if you are not required to pay VRT, you must still register your vehicle when you come to Ireland (see 'Rules' below). The following groups are exempt from paying VRT:

* Certain disabled drivers
* Visitors to Ireland who have owned their vehicles abroad for more than 6 months and who will be resident here temporarily
* People who have owned their vehicles abroad for more than 6 months and who are moving permanently to Ireland
* People posted to Ireland as part of the diplomatic corps

NOTE: If you are moving to Ireland and are among those exempt from paying VRT you cannot sell your vehicle for more than 12 months after the vehicle is registered.
Doesn't seem to mention an exemption of VAT though.
