Hi,

I'm thinking about getting a lumidock for my iphone.

http://www.lumidock.com/

and I'm wondering if the ashtray insert from an E39 is the same size as the one from my E38??

The part numbers are different: :(

E39 = 51168184516
E38 = 51168170481

but if they are the same size I can fit the lumidock in and Macgyver the rest.

anyone any ideas?

Thanks lads,

I would go with MEDIABRIDGE instead of that (sorry but looks cheap) product.
Will the mfsw buttons be still functional with the media bridge?

Also it's no all that steady, especially under hard braking, if the reviews are to be believed.
hmm, half of what I want is a good charging port/phone holder ( i want to avoid a windscreen mount if possible)
the other thing I'm looking at is some way to play the iPhone/iPod/radio apps through the oem head unit.

I was thinking of getting an after market unit, as the flip down lid on the dash would cover it, but if this media bridge thing is any good it might be a goer.

Take a look here: http://www.bavariansoundwerks.com/product/711/282/DICE-MediaBridge-BMW-iPod--iPhone--Satellite--Bluetooth--USB-Integration-Kit/
there you can find some videos about installation and how to operate with that interface. Unfortunately SIRIUS RADIO in not available in EU, but rest of this DICE unit is very useful and good built quality.
Also on market is GROM AUDIO:
http://www.gromaudio.com/store/usb_adapters/bmw_mini_98-06_usb_bluetooth_android_ipod_car_kit.html
not so many happy customers as for DICE :)
That is IMHO after full test of both devices! ;)
Good luck with your choise!
P.S. If you drive BMW and you are honest BMW man, do NOT look for cheapest, but for best solutions for your car, because she deserve the best!
LOL

I doubt you have DSP as they usually came with satnav, as in premium systems.
But it is possible you have DSP still, even with no satnav.
Do you have an amplifier in your boot, left side on the e38 I think?

If you see a cd changer and nothing else, then you have no DSP

Also be careful, if your unit is a Becker, many aftermarket solutions like this do not work in the E38.

no Amp, just a cd changer.

how would I know if its a becker unit?
Its the factory fitted oem tape deck.

cheers for the info b.t.w
You need to take it out I am afraid. No big deal, quick enough.

I may be wrong and the Becker radio might have come up as BM54 module only in satnav setups as opposed to just the head unit in the dash.

But it takes 1mn to take the radio out, will be quicker to verify than trying to find out on the internet.

Easiest way to find out without guessing; type-in last 7 characters from your VIN here: http://www.bmwarchiv.de/vin/
and see in coding list DSP is on it or not. ;)
And don't talk about any amps (after market or OEM) because they not affect any interface connection on car, DSP is only think to know before order interface and/or DSP adaptor. All other "mods" in not important!
User Manual for DICE:
http://diceelectronics.com/support/files/BMW_mediabridge1500_user_manual_090111.pdf
Read, it makes easier to figure out what cables or adaptors you need.
